Welcome to the first issue of Around Town, the WHS PTO's effort to support our fellow Weston not for profit and other community organizations. Events are posted at the request of those organizations. Information regarding submissions can be found at the end of the issue. Enjoy!



 

Anthem Reggae Band at Lachat Town Farm 

Saturday September 21st, 6pm - 9pm
 
Bring your lawn chairs, friends and family. We’ll provide access to food trucks, and beer/wine for purchase. Together we’ll be feeling irie and transported to the islands on the last day of Summer with Anthem Reggae Band.  Anthem  has performed many international reggae artists, including Third World, Yellowman, Jimmy Cliff, The Wailers Band, Burning Spear, Black Uhuru, and Judy Mowatt to name a few.   Their live shows provide entertainment for your ears and eyes, and raise the island vibe to maximum levels.   So join us for a fun night... where, as Bob Marley would say, “Every little thing gonna be alright!”

Cost: $20 per Person, $25 at the door



 

WVFD's 8th Annual Golf Outing



The Weston Volunteer Fire Department (WVFD) is hosting its 8th Annual Golf Outing on September 23, 2019 at Aspetuck Valley Country Club. All proceeds from the event go to support the WVFD and its ongoing business operations in the town.  This includes, but not limited to: training, public relation events, fire safety, and equipment maintenance. Weston Women's League September Supper

The Weston Women's League, founded in 1972, is a non-profit, philanthropic organization and diverse group of women dedicated to volunteering and raising funds in support of charitable, educational and community needs in Weston and surrounding towns.

The WWL is hosting its annual September Supper on Wednesday 9/24 at Milestone restaurant in Redding. The dinner is open to members and non members also. Please click HERE for more info and to reserve your seat.


 

Harlem Wizard's Against Weston's Brainy Bunch

Weston Education Foundation Fundraiser, Saturday, October 5

Come watch a team of K-12 Weston teachers and administrators (aka Weston’s Brainy Bunch) “battle” it out on the basketball court against the world-famous Harlem Wizards! The game is guaranteed to be fun for all ages, with tricks, skills and amazing shots coupled with fan participation and lighthearted fun. Fifty lucky “Wiz Kids” will also get on the court with the Harlem Wizards during warmups! Advance purchase necessary. Full information on all ticket levels, including how to be a Wiz Kid, at harlemwizards.com. All net proceeds will be devoted to Weston Education Foundation's school-based grants. Concessions will be available at the game, thanks to the WHS Boosters Club. See you at the game! Saturday, October 5, 5-7pm at the Weston High School gym.

Practice ACT & Teentober @ Weston Public Library

WPL will be holding a practice ACT test on Sunday, October 6 from 12-4 PM.  It will simulate an actual ACT test and results will be e-mailed to parents about a week after the test.  Parents and Students can also set up a free 20-minute session with one of the college advisors to discuss their results. Middle and High School students are invited to join us for our Teentober events this October.  This is a time the library would like to recognize our teen patrons and focus on their needs.  Middle and High School students can pick up a special Bingo card with everyday activities . When you complete 1 row of BINGO and have it checked by Miss Alessandra, you will receive a prize.  Teentober Events will also include arts & crafts, a focus on Young Adult reads and films, mental health activities, and since Halloween is around the corner, treats!  Look for our Teentober events on the Weston Public Library website, and pick up your Bingo card beginning October 1.


 

ADAP's Eats & Treats

Save the Date for ADAP's (Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program in Weston) Eats & Treats event on Thursday, October 10, 6-8:30 pm at Aitoro Appliances in Norwalk. 

Local chefs from area restaurants and caterers donate food, time and talent to prepare the food in the on-site kitchens; WHS student band Caravan will perform again, and Gary Mendell, the founder of Shatterproof, is an invited guest. Last year, parents of children across all four schools attended, some with kids in tow, and we were able to touch on ADAP's ongoing work.


 

Weston Founders Day

October 11th,  4:30-6:30 p,m., Weston Town Hall

Join the festivities celebrating the founding of Weston. Master of Ceremonies, award-winning actor and Westonite James Naughton will welcome the crowd. Events include remarks from the Board of Selectmen, food trucks, kids activities, amazing music, re-enactors, and special “story corps” area where guests can briefly tell their very own Weston tale. And don’t miss our history making moment for 2019 - the Weston Selfie on the steps of town hall. Mark your calendars and see you on the 11th!

 
 
 

 

Kiwanis Reservoir Run

The Weston Kiwanis Club is honored to host the eighth year of the Reservoir Run Half Marathon, 5K, and Kids Fun Run on Sunday, October 27, 2019. We encourage you to join us for the Kiwanian's premier event. The Weston Community, Police, Town and Schools join together every year to bring you one of the finest events in CT. LOCATION: All events start and finish at Weston High School. Many volunteers will be on hand to guide you thru your day and running adventures. Both events are bib-chip timed.

START TIMES: 5K starts promptly at 8:30 am followed by the classic Half Marathon distance at 8:40 am  (If you believe your half marathon journey will take over three hours we can arrange for an early start.) Our half marathon course will be closing in three hours to accommodate traffic flow.

Newsletter Submissions

The WHS PTO newsletter is distributed on Mondays (except holidays & vacations), so please send your WHS-related submissions by the preceding Thursday at 5 pm to Amy Jansen, Communications Chair, at whsptocommunications@westonpspto.org. Any submissions received after that time may be delayed until the next newsletter.

Community or "About Town" news (and any information not directly related to WHS) will be sent out monthly in a supplemental edition of the newsletter on the THIRD Friday of each month. This information and news must be about or for Weston residents and for non-profit events and organizations only. Please send submissions by the preceding Wednesday, ie. at least two days before the publication dates of 9/20, 10/18, 11/15, 12/20, etc. Late submissions may not be included until the next month. Please send questions or submissions to whsptocommunications@westonpspto.org.
