PTO & SCHOOL NEWS

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Happy Halloween Eve!
What a difference a year makes. Trick or treating and gathering might be on hold however hopefully there is “normal” costume fun at school today.

I want to send a big thank you to those parents who  have been selected to join The Fall 2020 Task Force. Their voices will offer support and guidance from the Virtual Distance Learning families. William McKersie will formally announce the selection soon.

We have additional changes to our  Executive PTO  board as, Tammy Roberts, our treasurer extraordinaire has resigned. She’s been a PTO institution (quite frankly) as a constant, a guide and always there to offer her wealth of knowledge and voice of reason. She has served graciously as:

Treasurer, Past President, President, Grade Coordinator, Yearbook Chair, 4th & 5th Grade Chair, Spiritwear Chair, Vice President, Gift Wrap Chair, and MDF Chair over the past 15 years.  Likely nobody will be able to fill her shoes however we are in the process of finding a replacement for that position.

Currently there are four open PTO positions: Talent on Tap/Fundraising (2nd chair)/Yearbook (2nd chair)/Memorial Day Fair.

If you have any interest and want to get involved please reach out to me. daniellarc@aol.com

As we look ahead we have  “Chalk the Walk” on November 21st and 22nd.

I also hope that you will consider supporting Weston’s Scouting BSA Troop 788 as they launch their Annual Holiday Fundraiser by purchasing a Christmas tree or wreath this November.  You will find the information below in the newsletter.

Please join the PTO next Monday morning for a Q & A with  Mark Cooper, the Director of Health at the Westport/Weston Health District. Please bring your questions.  More info can be found below in the newsletter.

I hope everyone stays safe, healthy and Covid free.

Have a wonderful and safe weekend.

Don’t forget, daylight savings ends Sunday, November 1st!

BOE REPORT

BOE Report – October 19 and October 26, 2020

The Board of Education met on October 19th,  via Zoom.

Dr. McKersie reiterated the health district is in full support of full return to in person learning. Even with the metrics creeping up. The district (students, families and staff) understands that wearing masks in school and families performing their own health checks at home are of utmost importance. Dr. McKersie praised the districts excellence at containing any positive cases and tracking. He emphasized that there are really great systems and protocols in place.

As of the date of the meeting, the number of Voluntary Distance Learners (VDL) were at the lowest level, 261 student.

Ken Craw spoke to the full return starting Monday, October 26th. Mr. Craw said the Full Return in the Fall of 2020 is going to look different than the Fall of 2019. The desks will spread out as much as possible, integrating the VDL remote learners as part of the class, involved and interacting. They understand screen time is an issue. VDL students will be part of the class but periodically they will be working on their own without a screen, reading/math/specials. He emphasized that there will be breaks from the screen.

There was a scheduled VDL parent-guardian informational meeting on Thursday, October 22nd which answered questions that were presented by parents/guardians. Wednesday afternoons remain check in time for VDL students through December.

Tracy Edwards recognized the efforts of the entire special education staff, teachers and advisors. They have come together for a monumental task. Evaluations were conducted with a record number of PPTs. Special Education work is aligned with general education work. When the district shifted to Full Return, all of the support times for students had to change to adjust to the new schedule.

Phil Cross updated the board with the new traffic plan for the afternoon. The change to traffic patterns was due to the backup at Hurlbutt. K-1 pick up will remain the same, through the bus depot, 2-5 will drive through School Road to WIS or to HES. (You can refer to the email from Mr. Cross dated 10/19 for more information)

Mrs. Kaddis and Mrs. Falber praised their staff for all of the work they have put forth into planning and making classrooms ready for a full return. Desks will be spaced as far apart as possible in classrooms. Lunch has been adjusted at Hurlbutt, K-1 will remain in the classroom for lunch and 2nd grade will eat lunch out of their classrooms. For WIS, lunch will be rotated in the cafetorium and cleaned in between shifts. The staff is working hard to finalize schedules for special education class, interventionists and VDL meaningful brakes.

The Board of Education met on October 26th, via Zoom. The purpose of this meeting was to approve the formation of a search committee for a new Superintendent. The committee was approved and will begin their search shortly.

The next regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting will be Monday, November 16th.

All Board of Education meetings can be viewed on their YouTube channel.

WESTON SCOUTS FUNDRAISER

Dear Weston Community,

We hope this email finds you healthy and well!

Even during these most challenging times, Weston’s Scouting BSA Troop 788 is determined and excited to launch their Annual Holiday Fundraiser. This has been a long-standing and cherished tradition in our town, which has brought joy to the troop and to our community, and one which the Scouts have pledged to continue safely, even amid the backdrop of an ongoing pandemic. Their commitment is admirable!

Again this year, they will be selling premium fresh cut Christmas Trees and hand-made Balsam Wreaths as a service to Weston and as a fundraiser to help defray the cost of their scouting activities throughout the year.

The Scouts will be kicking off their sales on Election Day, Nov. 3rd at the Weston Middle School parking lot. And they will sell again at the Onion Barn and at Lachat Town Farm on weekends after Thanksgiving. You can also place your orders online now at:

www.westontroop788.org

The trees are grown in New Hampshire and fresh cut a few days before they arrive on our lot. Supplies are limited, so please make sure to reserve your trees and wreaths early. We sell out every year and have to finalize orders soon. We’ll have your items tagged and ready to pick up at the Onion Barn after Thanksgiving or we can deliver them to your door for only $10.

Please note that this year, due to availability and supply constraints, if you wish to order a tree larger than 10’ or wreaths sized 36” – 48”, they will need to be pre-ordered. Although the troop will work hard to fulfill your order, they are not able to guarantee delivery. In the event that they can’t deliver your item(s), a refund will be issued.

We thank you in advance for your continued support of the Weston Boy Scout Troop!

Wishing you and your loved ones continued health and happy holidays!
