PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Weston High School Parents,

There have been a number of very important things happening and coming up this month.

On Friday, in light of the recent school tragedy in Michigan and the letter to Weston parents last week, Interim Prin. Givoni joined our monthly General PTO Board meeting and shared a part of the school safety plan specifically about Threat Assessment.  It was a serious but very important presentation that I encourage ALL of you to watch on our meeting recording page that is posted on our website.  While the topic is tough to hear and acknowledge these realities in our world today, it is critical we all know what is being addressed by the district and what else we can do as parents.

Friday we were also joined by the Curriculum Instructional Leader for English and Language Arts, Jessica DiBuono. She shared relevant information about the past, current and future challenges and accomplishments in ELA and resources available for our students.  Please click the link below to access the presentation for more details.

Another interesting topic available to parents is on December 7, 2021. The WPS District will be hosting a “Transition 101 Workshop” for families of students with disabilities from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. The session will be hosted by Missy Wrigley, a Consultant for the State Education Resource Center (SERC). The purpose of the presentation is to share information with you about high school to post secondary transition options. Families district-wide are encouraged to attend to learn more about the transition process for students with disabilities. This presentation will focus on IDEA regulations specific to transition services at the secondary level and will address ways to make the transition into career/employment, post secondary education/training, and/or independent living a successful process for students with disabilities and their families.

Please see the email from Weston Public Schools sent on 11/17 for the Zoom link and other details.

While I do not have many details as this day is still being planned, Friday Dec. 17th will be themed "Day of Service'' at the high school. Many activities will be available for our students to participate in and learn about the multiple dimensions of serving in our communities.

This Thursday is the midpoint of Q2 and a perfect time to check in with your student on how things are going and whether they need any additional resources for the second half of the quarter. Midterms will be held mid-January and an email from the high school will be sent out this week with details about this year's schedule.

As always, if you have any ideas, comments or questions, please reach out to me at kristana.esslinger@gmail.com or (203) 981- 0582.

Sincerely,

Kristana Esslinger

BOE MEETING REPORT

November 30 Special Enrollment Meeting Highlights

NESDEC Highlights Projections include over the next 3 years:

  • Grades K-2 enrollment decrease
  • Grades 3-5 enrollment increase
  • Grades 6-8 enrollment decrease
  • Grades 9-12 enrollment decrease

Weston averages 59 births a year, a decline of –6 fewer births historically (ten years). Weston is experiencing an increase in kindergarten students' "net-move-ins." Strong real estate sales provide a positive impact on enrollment.

SLAM Highlights Projections include a highlight of this year and the next 5 and 10 years:

Actual enrollment projections were 2.4% (-54 students) lower than projects, the most significant deviation within the High School (-34 students). A Medium Projection Model was used to predict the most likely enrollment trajectory with kindergarten projections utilizing a blend of Cohort Survival Method and Regression-based method.

  • Hurlbutt is projected to increase over the next 5 years, reaching 500 students by 2026-27. In the last 5 years, the projection is to taper off at 490 students.
  • WIS is projected to experience a drop in 2022 to 464 students and then steadily increase by 2029-30, with the last 3 remaining years of the 10-year projection reaching an average of 562 students.
  • Weston Middle School is projected to decline and reach the lowest point in the year 2025-26 with 500 students with a recovery in the years following to reach 575-590 students in 2030-31 and 2031-32.
  • Weston High School is projected to see a gradual decline over the next 5 years and then a sharp dip in 2026-27 due to the smaller successive cohorts matriculating through the school system. A rebound will occur in the projection horizon's last 3 years, with enrollment exceeding 700 students by 2030-31.

CLASS NOTES
SENIOR CLASS

In just a short 7 months, our children will be donning their cap and gowns. To say the least, our kids have been through a lot over the past 18 months and a lot has been taken away from them. As class reps, we are working hard to make sure their senior year is as memorable as possible. We have been providing monthly “Senior Specials” which will continue throughout the year. On graduation day, we will end our 4 year parent rep term with the post graduation event (fondly known as PGE).

Over the past couple of months, we have been asked over and over....”How can I help?”..to that we say “click HERE to learn how!”

Thanks to all for your continued support!
Your class reps,
Jen Atsumi, Kristin Brooks, Sam Leuzzi, and Ali Melito
