Did you know that ADAP is the local prevention council for Weston? ADAP is the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program of Weston, but it is about more than increasing awareness around alcohol and substance use for our kids. To be sure, the physical, neurological (what happens to your one and only body and brain!), social and emotional impact of substance use by teens is a core piece of the prevention work we do. We also try to address growing mental health concerns through our programming.
ADAP’s mission is to provide information and resources on healthy choices for Weston youth and families. Who to turn to, what to do, and how to have more supportive conversations at home.
The Youth Wellness Council (a club at WHS) gives kids the chance to meet monthly and talk in a safe, nonjudgmental place with their peers about whatever concerns them; they are guided by a trained facilitator, Tim Walsh. This is Tim’s 9th year supporting Weston teens. There is an ingrained code of confidentiality among the kids: what they see there and what they say there, stays there.
In recent years, before and during the pandemic, ADAP has partnered with Weston Youth Services to sponsor programs to support our youth and families. The world has been changing under our feet and as we emerge from these unprecedented times, there are additional social and emotional issues that kids and families are confronting.
If you are interested in brainstorming, and helping to bring programs to kids and families in town that address these issues, please consider being a part of this group of parent volunteers. We all want to keep our kids safe and well.
