OUTGOING PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Weston High School Parents,

I find it hard to believe that this is my last President's Message to all of you.  To those of you that have read our newsletter this year, I thank you!

This morning. PTO volunteers were there before school to wish our students "Good Luck on Finals" sharing sweet and salty treats with them. This year flew by and in a week it will be graduation for our seniors and the 9th-11th graders will be rising sophomores, juniors and seniors!

There is so much to look back on this year.

-  We had very engaging speakers during our General Board meetings this year.  We brought Curriculum Leaders in to tell us more about what our students are learning in the classrooms. We had a school social worker share with us information about executive functioning skills and different types of "learners".  PhD Michele Albright spoke to us about Social/Emotional Learning and other mental health issues followed by a Q&A.

- Interim Principal Givoni shared interesting presentations regarding School Safety, Portrait of the Graduate and an explanation of DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) and what it is and what it is not.

- We focused on mental wellness of our students - our Sophomores who coming into this year had never had anything "normal", more open discussion of the issues with the school, the BOE and the town, Reading Day before midterms and finals, Care Packages, and a viewing of Screenagers: the Next Chapter which focused on the issues of screen time and mental health issues in teens.

- Philanthropy - We continued to support the Spirit Fund for students, funds towards the December Day of Service, and new drafting tables for the Art department to name a few.

- Fundraising - We were able to hold our bake sale this year followed by pie sales.  The ACT/SAT prep classes continue to be very popular.  And after a 3 year in-person hiatus, we held our Annual Memorial Day 5K which raised over $20K.

- While not PTO sponsored events, we were thrilled to see Prom and Evergreen back for our students!

I want to thank the current PTO Board for all of their hard work this year.  As I pass the President's baton to Christine Harris, I am excited to serve one more year on the board as the Past President.

I want to wish everyone a healthy, relaxing, and fun-filled summer!

Best,

Kristana Esslinger

WHS PTO President

INCOMING PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Hello!

I would like to introduce myself and let you know that I will be serving in the role of PTO President for the 2022-23 school year.  It is an honor and privilege to have the opportunity to serve our PTO and community in this capacity.  I look forward to serving and will strive to continually support the mission of the PTO:

“…to advance quality education at WHS through open communication among students, faculty, parents, administrators, the BOE, and the community; address issues affecting the quality of the educational environment; support the school and administration through events and fundraising; and provide assistance, when requested, to WHS student activities.”

With year-end just a short time away, I want to congratulate the Class of 2022 on their upcoming graduation and wish them all the best in the bright future ahead!  We are all inspired by your resilience and perseverance having completed your High School days during the most unusual of circumstances.

I would also like to commend our juniors, sophomores and freshmen who also have risen to meet the challenges the 2020’s have presented thus far.  All three grades have experienced atypical school years.  The sophomores and freshmen only experienced midterm exams for the first time this year and they, alongside the juniors are about to sit for their first final exams beginning this week.  Good Luck to all!  I feel confident our students will handle finals as gracefully and successfully as they have handled the previous two years.  We have a wonderful group of students who have been supported by their parents and teachers.  Thank you to all in our PTO community who have worked so hard to support our students.

The incoming board and I have already begun to make plans for the next school year.  Our PTO membership Drive will open in August and our first General Board meeting will be in September.  We’d be delighted if you would join the PTO next year, as we are planning great speakers, events, and more.  Becoming a member of the PTO will be the best way to keep in touch and stay updated about everything we have planned for you.  If you would like to get in touch with me with any questions, ideas, or concerns please do not hesitate to reach out.  Feel free to email me at crizpto@yahoo.com or call/text at 516-581-7474.  I am happy to help and love hearing new ideas!

Wishing you a wonderful and enjoyable summer!

With warm regards,

Christine Harris

JUNIOR CLASS
SOPHOMORE CLASS

Congratulations to the sophomores for rising to the challenges of Spirit Week.  In a week that began with a coin drive to support Ukraine, ending with a fun filled Friday of tug of war, balloon toss, three legged race and pie eating contests, the Sophomore Class of 2024 rose to the occasion and not only raised the most money for Ukraine but came out the overall winners of this fun filled week.  Dressed all in blue to show their sophomore pride, they earned the treat of breakfast from Uncle Leo’s, which will be delivered to WHS for them this Tuesday.  Exciting times!

This was followed by the opportunity to attend the very first Evergreen Dance since 2019.  Our sophomores who attended had a fabulous time! We’d like to express our gratitude to ADAP and Sonya Stack for enabling this treasured tradition to return this year in the Spring, ensuring the Class of 2024 had the opportunity to participate in this Weston tradition.  Many thanks also to our fabulous parent co-chairs, Julia Brennan and Rebecca Solano who coordinated the return of Evergreen!  Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

For those who ordered a Final Exam Care Package, your students will be able to pick them up across from the cafeteria during the lunch block, on Monday June 13th, between 10:52-12:28pm.  Many thanks to Lyn Milliman, Debbie Morvillo, Carlye Adler Nussbaum, Livia Berardinelli Ruggiero, Nancy Hayden and Juad Masters who all the volunteered to help coordinate these care packages.  Thank you for helping create these for our students, and thank you to all who purchased.  All proceeds from this fundraiser will go to the Class of 2024 PTO fund.

Wishing you all a great summer!
