A Letter from the President's Desk

Dear WHS PTO Member,

Happy 2020! January is well underway and, as indicated by the upcoming midterm exams, your student is halfway through the school year! No matter whether your child is taking his or her first round of midterms or the last, the two weeks ahead can be filled with stress and anxiety.  The counseling department has been working with the kids this year on ways to manage stress through mindfulness and other techniques. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s counselor, if the stress and anxiety your child experiences during the midterm season seems out of the ordinary.  As always, I am happy to be a liaison for you, if you have greater concerns about the midterm process or other related issues.

January in Weston is budget season! There are many opportunities for parents to get and stay informed about the school budget and the goings on at the Board of Education meetings by attending or watching the many budget meetings that are currently being held (go to www.westops.org for more information).  I would also invite you to attend the Budget Presentation by Superintendent McKersie that is being hosted by the four district PTOs this coming Wednesday night, January 15th, at 7 p.m. in the WHS Cafeteria.

Our first General Meeting of the year was held this past Friday morning. In addition to our normal PTO business, we considered and approved a number of amendments to our ByLaws. Bylaws are the broad rules that govern how our group is organized and run. Our Bylaws cover topics such as the makeup of the executive board, how officers are elected and membership requirements. While our ByLaws are reviewed by the ByLaws Chair every year, amendments are made only when the governing rules need to be changed to more accurately reflect the current organization. Our ByLaws were last amended in 2013.  A special thank you to Shannon Nordlinger, our current ByLaws Chair, for her work on the amendment of this important document. The new ByLaws can be found on the WHS PTO web page at www.westonpspto.org.

As always, if you have a question, concern or comment about the PTO or the high school, do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Warm regards,

Anne Troxell

Philanthropy

We wanted to use this opportunity to share with you some examples of the great work the PTO is doing with our schools.

College Counseling and Career Center
Last year the WHS PTO donated $35,000 to renovate the College Counseling and Career Center. It was fully completed in time for the beginning of the 2019-20 school year. The objective was to create an enjoyable and productive space for our students, our visitors as well as our own College Counselor Randi Greene. Included in the renovation was the main area with a variety of seating options, places to relax, a new door to the kitchenette for our visiting Admissions Representatives, and a window for Randi! Below you can see some pictures of the enhanced space. We hear it is a well used space!  Stop by if you are in the high school.

Virtual Reality Goggles
In November, the WHS PTO approved $1000 to purchase ~50 virtual reality goggles to use in our social studies programs in addition to other programs in the future. While they only just received them, they have already put them to good use. Please see attached pictures.

If you have any questions regarding any of our philanthropy efforts, please contact our Philanthropy Chair at kristana.esslinger@gmail.com.

Spirit Committee

Visitor parking is on the street opposite the Main Entrance and on the access road between WIS and WHS (stadium field side only). Please refrain from parking in any parking lot or numbered space.
