PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

On behalf of the entire Weston High School PTO, I’d like to take a moment to express my deep condolences for the recent passing of a dear community member, Kerry McNulty.  If you would like to reach out to help the family at this difficult time, please connect to our WHS PTO Senior Class Representatives for information on meal trains and help with groceries.

Hello WHS PTO!

Welcome to November! We have so much to look forward to following the gorgeous and action packed October that seemed to fly by. We started off October with volunteer focus on supporting the Student Government Association with their Homecoming initiatives.  Along with the guidance of their Faculty advisors, the SGA organized a fantastic Homecoming Spirit week, including the Homecoming Dance, festive spirit days all week at school, and Half Time with a fabulous Decades-themed float parade and to wrap it all up a fun Alumni Parade, organized by Maggie Kins. It was truly a pleasure to be able to offer them our support from the PTO.  Thank you to every member of our PTO for being a part of our organization enabling us to work as a team to make our students' days at WHS all the more enjoyable and memorable. We had a kind note from the Faculty Advisors at WHS, and I’d like to share a portion of their thank you message to the PTO:

We just wanted to take a moment and say THANK YOU! for all of your help with selling homecoming tickets and decorating the gym on Saturday.  It was really appreciated and the kids had a great time! ….If you could please extend our thanks to all of those that helped from the PTO, that would be greatly appreciated! You all have been an amazing partner these last couple of weeks and I hope you know how much we (not just the student government, but the advisors) appreciate your support.  It has made our lives a lot easier and it has been a pleasure to actually meet so many people from the PTO!

November kicks off with our November 4th General Board meeting followed by our annual Election Day Bake Sale, organized by Carrie Shaffer. This is a town-wide favorite event and an essential fundraiser for WHS PTO. This year, all net proceeds will go towards funding future teacher and staff appreciation initiatives. If you’d like to donate some baked goodies click here to sign up.  Shortly following our bake sale comes our annual Online Pie Sale, coordinated by Julia Brennan.  The pickup date for the pies is currently planned Sunday, Nov 20th, just before Thanksgiving. More details coming soon!

Thank you Carrie and Julia for putting these favorite fundraisers together!

Looking forward to seeing everyone soon either at a meeting or at the bake sale!  Until then, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions, concerns, or ideas. Feel free to email me at crizpto@yahoo.com or call/text me at 516-581-7474. I am happy to help and would love to hear from you.

With Warm Regards,

Christine Harris

WHS PTO President

If you were not able to attend our last PTO general meeting on October 14th, you can access the recording HERE

The next monthly PTO General Board Meeting will be on November 4th.

In our last PTO General Meeting Director of College & Career Counseling Randi Green recommended her all-time favorite book related to the college admissions process:

'Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be: An Antidote to the College Admissions Mania'  by Frank Bruni

Randi discussed how the book highlights the importance of guiding our children to find the right fit, a place where they can thrive academically, socially, and extracurricularly. As well as an important reminder that attending that one specific name school will not determine our child's outcome; instead, it's what they will put into their college experience as a whole that will make the ultimate difference.

Click here to learn more about this book or if you wish to purchase it using WHS PTO Amazon Smile.

Mark your calendars! We are excited to welcome guest speaker Weston High School School Resource Officer Joe Mogollon

Please plan to attend or view our next General Board Meeting on November 4th.

To learn more about SRO’s at WPS, this month’s podcast What’s up in the Weston Public Schools? features a conversation with WMS School Resource Officer Jason Kim. They discuss the role of the SROs and how they partner with the schools to support our students.

The last game of the year is played against Joel Barlow and this year we are hosting the game.

Please help us staff this event:

AP Test Registration - Due November 4th

In last week’s message home, Principal Meghan Ward shared this useful information and reminder: On October 19th Ms. Starzyk sent an email home to families and students wishing to register for an AP exam. Please refer to that email for the registration form. Each student registering for an AP exam in May will only fill out one form that lists all of the AP exams you wish to take. This form must be completed and returned with one check for the total cost of all exams taken. Checks are to be made out to WHS-AP. Each exam is $98.00. All completed forms should be returned to the WHS School Counseling Office. The deadline for these forms is November 4th.

AP Exams take place during May 1 – 12, 2023. Please be advised that these tests are 3+ hours long. Here is the link for the exam dates:

SPED LIASON

Weston HS PTO has a Special Education (SPED) group of parents that host informational presentations and informal get togethers to share ideas and thoughts. If you're interested in joining please email Jean-Claude Oligario at jc@oligario.comto be invited to the Google group.

Last week WHS played Unified Soccer (A) versus Bethel High School.

It was a great time and the hosts treated our team to pizza and snacks afterwards. It's a great program run by Erik Brudvig and Eric Horton. They're always looking for more players. Contact erikbrudvig@westonps.org or erichorton@westonps.org for more information.

Last week our group hosted an informational webinar on what happens when your SPED child finishes school, outside financial programs, healthcare and legal documents you need to be aware of as your child progresses past 18. For a copy of the deck or questions please join the parent Google group above.

In the next 2 weeks there will be two webinars/meetings. The first (November 3) is entitled Understanding Special Education Policies. Contact jc@oligario.com or join the Google group for a link to register. The second will be hosted by the District and the topic is understanding and navigating the new IEP. This meeting will be live on November 15. Please see the recent email from Tracy Edwards for more information and signing up.
